Five Players from Canada's 2018 Hockey Team Asked to Go to London Police
Five players from Canada's 2018 World Juniors hockey team are told to go to the police in London, Ontario, to face charges of sexual assault. This news comes from The Globe and Mail, but TSN hasn't confirmed it. The charges are linked to an alleged assault in June 2018 involving players from the 2018 team and a woman known as E.M. The players have a certain time to surrender to the police. The London Police Service hasn't commented on the report yet.
These allegations from 2018 have shocked Canadian sports. In May 2022, TSN reported that a woman, identified as E.M., settled a $3.55 million lawsuit against Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League, and eight former CHL players. This led to a parliamentary committee asking Hockey Canada for more details on the case and how they handle such allegations. As information about Hockey Canada's response came out, sponsors ended their partnerships, and top executives were replaced.
Under increasing public pressure, London police reopened the investigation in July 2022 after initially closing it in February 2019 without charges. In December 2022, The Globe and Mail shared court documents quoting a London Police Services sergeant, David Younan, stating that five former Team Canada players were believed to have committed criminal offences. Other players were witnesses, and some might or might not become suspects.
